LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this worksheet are to:

  • discuss different tools and DIY projects;
  • practise vocabulary for tools;
  • chat about experiences and give instructions for DIY tasks.

Students talk about tools and DIY, learn tool names (e.g. masking tape, nuts and bolts, paint roller) and discuss how to use them. They practise describing what tools are for and share their experiences using them. Students also choose DIY projects and prepare step-by-step instructions, saying which tools to use and how to do the tasks.

Vocabulary LabUnlimited Plan

This is a Vocabulary Lab worksheet. With it, students are introduced to a set of vocabulary on a specific topic and practise it through controlled activities, speaking tasks and games. Learn more about it here.

WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY

This worksheet starts with a warm-up. Students discuss questions about having and using a toolbox. Afterwards, they look at pictures and complete gaps with vocabulary for tools (e.g. thread, saw, pliers). Moving on, students discuss questions about choosing and using the tools from the previous task. Following that, they match more tools (e.g. tape measure, sandpaper, a stepladder) with their photos. Students then look at the photos again and explain what the things are used for. They also give examples

PRACTISING VOCABULARY FOR TOOLS

In this part of the worksheet, students put tools in order, according to the questions (e.g. Which tool do people lose most often?). They explain their ideas. Afterwards, students look at tools (e.g. drill, extension lead, glue gun) and discuss questions about them and DIY projects. Moving on, students choose DIY projects in photos (e.g. decorative shelves made with wooden boxes) and practise vocabulary for tools. They imagine they are making video tutorials explaining how to do them. Students prepare step-by-step instructions for each project, mentioning which tools they’d use.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This worksheet also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students find and correct mistakes in sentences. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.

    Great lesson! I also use it with B1 students; they can handle it and enjoy it a lot. At C1 level, they are more interested in details: not just a screwdriver, but different types of screwdrivers; not just leveling, but the exact angles involved.

      Thanks for the comment! When creating lessons, we use different sources to help us detemine the level of words. The tools introduced in this lesson are generally considered B2 or C1, but I’m glad you were able to use the lesson with lower level students, too.
