LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

  • discuss clothing and describe outfits;
  • practise patterns and materials vocabulary;
  • suggest outfit improvements for specific scenarios.

In this lesson, students talk about their personal experiences with clothing. They review vocabulary for fabric patterns and clothing fits (e.g. plain, patterned, tight), discuss their preferences and give advice on what people should wear. Students explore words for fabrics (e.g. corduroy, cotton, polyester) and review clothing items (e.g. hoodie, shirt, tie). They also work in pairs, giving situational fashion advice.

WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY

This lesson focuses on patterns and materials vocabulary and starts with a warm-up. Students look at different categories related to clothing (e.g. a favourite item in your wardrobe). They choose two of them and talk about an item from each. Afterwards, students examine words for fabric patterns and clothing fits (e.g. checked, striped, baggy) in sentences. They use them to label pictures. Then, students look at options of clothing styles and patterns. They say which options they prefer and why. After that, they put together outfits for people (e.g. a person in their 50s going on a date) in the sentences using adjectives from the previous exercise. Moving on, students work in pairs and decide who created better outfits

MORE VOCABULARY AND DISCUSSION

In this part of the lesson, students read sentences about different fabrics (e.g. denim, leather, cotton) and answer questions about clothing items and their materials. Following that, they complete sentences with phrases, combining words for fabrics and words for clothing items (e.g. wool jumper, corduroy trousers). Students add details. They then work in pairs and imagine they are fashion advisers. Students read about various people’s situations and agree on the three best pieces of advice for them. They use patterns and materials vocabulary. Finally, students look at pictures of people with different styles. They describe their outfits and suggest improvements for specific scenarios.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students write the missing letters to create patterns and materials vocabulary in sentences. They then choose three sentences and say why they would or wouldn’t like to have what’s described in them. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
