EXERCISE 5

EXERCISE 9

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

  • discuss experiences and feelings related to visiting the dentist;
  • practise key dental health vocabulary;
  • develop listening and viewing skills through media related to dental care;
  • role-play dentist-patient consultations.

In this lesson, students talk about their last visit to the dentist’s. They review useful vocabulary (e.g. root canal, braces, extract), work with dialogues between dentist and patient and watch a video on why some people dislike dental visits. Students discuss ways to manage fear of the dentist, reflect on dental care and share their opinions and experiences. They also listen to conversations at the dentist’s, explore consultation phrases (e.g. will it hurt?, let me take a look) and role-play dental appointments.

WARM-UP AND DENTAL HEALTH VOCABULARY

This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students rank their last visit to the dentist’s office using smiley faces. They explain their choice. After that, students use words (e.g. wisdom tooth, gums, toothache) from pictures to complete sentences typically heard at a dental clinic (e.g. you’ll need a filling to repair your tooth). They then complete a dialogue between a dentist and a patient using the sentences from the previous exercise. Moving on, students read the dialogue again and answer questions related to what happens in the situation.

USEFUL PHRASES AND ROLE-PLAY

In this part of the lesson, students brainstorm reasons why some people dislike going to the dentist. They then watch the first part of a video where a dentist talks about it and compare their ideas. Next, students watch the second part of the video and tick the methods for managing fear that are mentioned. Afterwards, they discuss questions about dental care, anxiety and oral habits. Then, students practise dental health vocabulary and examine pairs of dental scenarios (e.g. getting a root canal OR having a toothache from time to time). They choose the option they prefer and explain why. After that, students listen to two conversations at the dentist’s and complete phrases with the words they hear. Next, they match the phrases from the previous task to different situations. Finally, students get information cards and role-play dentist-patient consultations.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete a text with the target vocabulary from the lesson. They then say if they think the experience described in the text is positive or negative for the patient and why. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
