WARM-UP AND VIDEO
This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students read jokes and discuss questions about humour in English. After that, they watch part of a video in which people tell dad jokes and complete the gaps. Then, students say which joke they think is the funniest. Moving on, they read the definitions of homophones and homographs and identify examples in the jokes from the previous exercise. Following that, students think of more examples of homophones and homographs. Afterwards, they complete the gaps in sets of homophones. Students say how each set of words is pronounced and how each word is spelled. They then read openings of jokes based on homophones and choose the correct punchlines. Students explain why they chose each ending.
HOMOPHONES AND HOMOGRAPHS PRACTICE
In this part of the lesson, students watch the second part of the video and say what homophones the people use in the jokes. Afterwards, students discuss questions about humour styles, delivery and cultural translation. Following that, they read dad jokes and complete the missing letters in homographs. Then, students read sentences, paying special attention to how each homograph is pronounced. Next, they listen to a recording and check the pronunciation. Finally, students work in pairs and get cards with dad jokes. They tell their jokes to their partner, making sure they deliver them well. Their partner chooses the funniest joke. After that, they swap roles.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete the gaps in sentences featuring the target homophones and homographs from the lesson. They then read the sentences out loud. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
