LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this ESL lesson on attention spans are to:
- talk about how digital habits affect focus and overall well-being;
- watch parts of a video about the impact of short-form videos on the brain;
- role-play a pitch in favour of short-form videos.
In this lesson, students discuss different content lengths and formats. They watch parts of a video about brain rot, explore a metaphor and talk about memory retention when consuming online media. Students analyse different video genres, share experiences and opinions and debate shrinking attention spans in a fast-paced world. They speculate on how a decline in focus would transform society and deliver a short pitch defending a specific profession’s need for short-form videos. Students can also do an extra task to review useful vocabulary (e.g. cognitive skills, addictive, subconscious).

WARM-UP AND VIDEO
This ESL lesson on attention spans starts with a warm-up. Students look at activities involving different lengths and formats (e.g. watching very short videos on social media for ten minutes) and answer questions about motivations and habits behind video viewing choices. At this point, they can do an extra vocabulary task. Students read statements on the negative impacts of short-form content and match useful words and phrases (e.g. brain rot, shrinking attention span, instant gratification) with their definitions. They then say which situations seem to be the most relatable. After that, students watch a video on brain rot and say what they think of the metaphor in it. Moving on, they discuss engagement habits, algorithmic control and memory retention when consuming video content. Next, students examine various types of videos (e.g. unboxing, Mukbang, authentic customer reviews) and share their personal habits and opinions.
DISCUSSION AND ROLE-PLAY
In this part of this ESL lesson on attention spans, students discuss their experiences with short-form videos considering aspects of daily life and mental health (e.g. attention span, tiredness and ability to relax). They then watch another part of the video, discuss reactions to the facts in it and give details. Following that, students discuss technology, ability to focus and cognitive adaptation. Afterwards, they imagine that people’s attention spans continue to shrink over the next 20 years. Students elaborate on several points (e.g. professions that would struggle the most). Moving on, they imagine the government is considering a ban on short-form video platforms. Students choose a profession and prepare a 60-second pitch arguing that a ban would create more problems for their community than it would solve.
