LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson are to:
- learn vocabulary related to performance reviews;
- discuss performance management tools, students’ perspectives, and hypothetical situations;
- watch and discuss a video about performance review meetings;
- engage in a role-play about a performance review meeting.
With this ESL lesson on performance reviews, students look at situations connected to employees’ performance. They discuss performance reviews and performance management tools, and learn relevant vocabulary (e.g. go above and beyond, be on track). They look at some situations, watch parts of a video about performance review meetings (4.5 minutes in total) and engage in a role-play.
C1 / Advanced60 minFlipped LessonUnlimited Plan
This is a Flipped Classroom lesson plan. In a nutshell, it means that the first part of the lesson needs to be done by students at home. Learn more about flipped classroom and how we implement it in these lesson plans in our post.
PRE-CLASS ACTIVITIES
In the pre-class part of this ESL lesson on performance reviews, students begin by reading situations and choosing the correct definition for the words in bold (e.g. mindset, reassess). Then, they have to come up with a possible reason for the situation. Next, they look at some performance management tools and find phrases (e.g. go above and beyond, set the bar high) which match definitions . After that, students check their understanding by reading some statements and choosing the correct response from three options, all of which contain the target vocabulary.
IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES
In this next part of the ESL lesson on performance reviews, students choose statements and complete with their own ideas. They also provide additional details. Then, they look at the performance management tools from the pre-class part and think of one advantage and one disadvantage of each.
After that, students watch a video with tips on how to make the best of a performance review meeting. Before they watch the video, students have to guess what the ‘PCOR’ method will be about. Then, they watch the video and check their answer. They continue with the video by taking down additional notes on the speaker’s points. After the video, they discuss questions about performance review meetings.
Next, students match sentence halves containing the target vocabulary. After that, they imagine a manager and an employee in a performance review meeting. They look at what each person is thinking and use the target vocabulary to express the ideas politely. To finish up the ESL lesson on performance reviews, students role-play two performance review meetings, paying attention to the details of the situation on the card.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete gaps in sentences with one word. Then, they finish the sentences with their own ideas. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
