The best and the worst (superlatives)

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this ESL lesson on superlatives are to:

• discuss opinions and reviews in various situations;
• practise the superlative form of adjectives;
• write a positive and a negative review.

In this lesson, students explore adjectives, work with reviews of different places and things and examine superlative forms. They talk about online reviews, share their opinions and work in pairs, asking and answering questions. Students practise useful phrases (e.g. I don’t recommend it, it was great, I enjoyed it) and write their own reviews using the target grammar and expressions.

WARM-UP AND SUPERLATIVES

This ESL lesson on superlatives begins with a warm-up. Students think of examples for different words (e.g. book, country, film) and one adjective to describe each of them. After that, they read reviews and say which word from the previous exercise they are about. Then, students do tasks where they complete grammar rules and analyse superlative adjectives. Afterwards, they complete sentences (e.g. Titanic is the saddest film.) with adjectives in the superlative form. Following that, students read the sentences from the previous task again and say if they agree.

GRAMMAR AND WRITING PRACTICE

In this part of this ESL lesson on superlatives, students get cards with questions and work in pairs. They choose adjectives from their card to complete the questions with the superlative form (e.g. What is the coldest month of the year?). Then, students take turns asking and answering the questions with a partner. Afterwards, they read reviews and choose between the comparative and superlative forms to complete them. Next, students discuss their habits and opinions on reading and writing online reviews. Moving on, they look at phrases (e.g. I recommend it, I didn’t like it, it wasn’t very good) and categorise them as negative or positive. Finally, students write two reviews, one positive and one negative, using the target grammar and phrases from the previous exercise.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This ESL lesson on superlatives also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students choose five ideas from a list (e.g. beautiful beach) and write sentences about their city or country in the superlative form. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
