WARM-UP AND VIDEO
This ESL lesson on object pronouns starts with a warm-up. Students examine a word puzzle and complete the missing letters to create the word ‘shopping’. They then answer the question in the title and say whether they shop online or offline. After that, students watch a video where people say what they prefer buying online and offline and tick the things they mention. Next, they watch the video again and tick reasons for not buying online. Moving on, students discuss questions about personal shopping habits and preferences.
VOCABULARY AND ROLE-PLAY
In this part of this ESL lesson on object pronouns, students read sentences related to shopping and label pictures with useful words and phrases (e.g. try on, pay for, get back). They then say whether each sentence is about someone who likes online or offline shopping. Following that, students review the sentences from the previous task and say if they are true for them. Next, they complete dialogues about making shopping decisions with the target verbs from the lesson. After that, students review the dialogues from the previous exercise and explore the rules for subject and object pronouns. Moving on, they replace words and phrases in sentences with object pronouns. Then, they respond to various questions using object pronouns in brackets. Finally, students work in pairs and role-play collaborative shopping tasks.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This ESL lesson on object pronouns also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete a dialogue with the target verbs from the lesson. They then complete another text about the situation in the dialogue with object pronouns. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
