LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

  • engage in talking about travel plans and experiences;
  • practise vocabulary for planning a trip;
  • watch a video excerpt with tips on travel preparation;
  • analyse travel problems and offer advice.

In this lesson, students discuss their experiences, explore travelling habits and review words and phrases for travel planning (e.g. do research on, make sure, double-check). They watch part of a video (04:47–06:27) with pre-trip tips, talk about their travel preparation practices and analyse travel problems to suggest preventive advice. Students discuss various types of trips and debate travel prep assistance. They also discuss different travel plans and evaluate their partner’s preparation.

WARM-UP AND VIDEO

This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students discuss their experience travelling and preparing for a trip. After that, they practise words and phrases for talking about travel plans (e.g. book, get ready for, fail to). In the task, students match statements about travel preparation with what they might mean. Moving on, they complete sentences with the words from the previous task in the correct form. Then, students choose two sentences, make them true about them and give details. Following that, they watch part of a video with pre-trip advice. First, students look at different points (e.g. pack your bags) and say what they think he will mention. They then watch the video and check. Afterwards, students guess which words were used in the video in various sentences. Next, they watch the video again and check their answers. Later, students discuss the video and personal travel preparation habits.

VOCABULARY PRACTICE AND DISCUSSION

In this part of the lesson,  students look at some situations in which travellers have problems. They brainstorm why they happened and suggest how to prevent them in the future. Students use phrases for talking about travel plans (e.g. double-check, pack, make sure). After that, they examine several kinds of trips (e.g. a summer trip and a winter trip). Then, students say one thing that is different when someone prepares for each. Moving on, they look at things and people that can help someone prepare for a trip (e.g. booking apps, guidebooks, tourist agencies). Next, students share their experiences and opinions. They then work in pairs and get cards with distinct travel situations. After two minutes of preparation using the target vocabulary, Student A presents their plan. Student B listens and evaluates if they prepared well. They swap roles until both have discussed two situations.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete the gaps in sentences to make words and phrases for talking about travel plans. They then put the sentences in the correct order so they describe a job application and interview process. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
