LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this reading worksheet about sleep are to:
- read excerpts of an article about sleep behaviours;
- practise useful vocabulary for sleep quality;
- talk about bedtime practices and health.
In this reading comprehension worksheet, students explore sleeping arrangements, share their perspectives and read excerpts of an article about sleeping habits. They discuss trends in sleeping arrangements and summarise the purpose of specific sections. Students work with phrases for discussing sleep quality (e.g. susceptibility to, optimize, bedding), talk about the impact of habits and environment on sleep and debate what might have detrimental effects on health.
WARM-UP AND DISCUSSION
This reading worksheet about sleep starts with a warm-up. Students read the term ‘sleeping arrangement’ and discuss their personal preferences regarding sleeping arrangements. Afterwards, they read the first part of the article ‘Sleep divorce’: could separate beds improve your health? and choose the correct first sentence for it. Students explain their choice. They then look at the text from the previous task again and answer questions about bedtime routines. After that, students think of other factors that have affected or are affecting sleeping arrangements. Next, they read the second part of the article and say which benefits are not mentioned.
VOCABULARY AND MORE DISCUSSION
In this part of the reading worksheet about sleep, students read the third part of the article and summarise the purpose of the paragraphs. Following that, they find phrases (e.g. these disturbances, these processes, situations like these) and explain what they refer to. Then, students examine the text from the previous text again and identify words and phrases for discussing health and sleep (e.g. interfere with, detrimental effects, impair). Afterwards, they complete words with missing letters in questions about the impact of habits and environment on sleep. Next, students check their answers with the previous task. They then discuss the questions. Finally, they look at pairs of sleep-related situations (e.g. having a very soft mattress OR having a firm pillow). Students decide which options are more likely to interfere with good sleep or have detrimental effects on sleep quality. They explain their opinion.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This advanced reading worksheet about sleep also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete sentences using the target vocabulary from the lesson. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
