LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

  • read an article about the discovery and historic sale of a comic;
  • practise phrases related to collectibles;
  • discuss collecting items and their value over time.

Students talk about their experiences keeping objects. They review vocabulary for discussing valuable items (e.g. invest in, increase in value, make a profit), debate collectibles and talk about the article using icons. Students also write a time capsule note about personally valuable items.

B1 / Intermediate45 minCritical Reading ClubUnlimited Plan

This is a Critical Reading Club worksheet. With this format, students need to read an online article at home and do the exercises in the classroom. Learn more about how to use such worksheets and their benefits in our post.

ACTIVITIES

At the beginning of the lesson, students choose a category (e.g. piece of furniture) and think about an item that they’ve had for a while (e.g. since childhood). They explain its origin and why they kept it. After that, students complete questions by choosing the best words to create collocations (e.g. be worth). Moving on, they answer the questions about the items they mentioned in the first exercise. Afterwards, students think of examples for points related to collecting items (e.g. things adults sometimes collect) and add details. Next, they examine icons associated with the article they read at home and try to remember details. Then, students discuss different views on valuable collectibles. Finally, they imagine creating a time capsule for loved ones to open in the future. Students choose items and write a note explaining their importance. They use the target vocabulary and share why they want their loved ones to have them.
