LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson are to:
- talk about animals, movement and actions;
- learn and practise prepositions of movement;
- watch a video in which a squirrel finds its way in a maze.
With this lesson, students explore vocabulary related to physical movement (e.g. obstacle, climb, maze) and talk about what animals can do. They discuss actions, nature-related topics and experiences. Students also watch a video about a squirrel in a maze, work with prepositions of movement and find their way through an image of a maze with obstacles.
B1 / Intermediate60 minFlipped LessonUnlimited Plan
This is a Flipped Classroom lesson plan. In a nutshell, it means that the first part of the lesson needs to be done by students at home. Learn more about flipped classroom and how we implement it in these lesson plans in our post.
PRE-CLASS ACTIVITIES
In the pre-class part of this lesson, students match animals (e.g. dog, frog, horse) with their descriptions. Afterwards, they look at words about moving through physical challenges (e.g. obstacles, climb, maze) from the previous task. Students do tasks where they choose words according to definitions and match words to their pictures. They then tick things a frog can do (e.g. dive into pools, find its way through a maze, jump over obstacles).
IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES
In the in-class part of the lesson, students say what they remember about animals from the pre-class activities. After that, they complete words (e.g. step, mud, dive) in questions about movement, nature and personal experiences. Students then answer the questions. Moving on, they watch a video about a squirrel in a maze and choose the best summary. Afterwards, students guess missing words in statements about the video. They watch the video again and check. Following that, students match the prepositions of movement in phrases (e.g. exit through the door) with pictures. Next, they choose the correct preposition in actions involving movement (e.g. walk around a lake, swim across a river). Students say which things they’ve done or experienced and give details. Finally, students find their way through a maze. They explain what route they follow and how they complete each obstacle using various prepositions of movement.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete gaps with prepositions of movement. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
