LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson are to:
- explore everyday public transportation and travel scenarios;
- practise key vocabulary for handling common travel situations;
- engage in travel role-plays.
In this worksheet, students listen to and recreate travel dialogues, identify synonyms and role-play different travel scenarios. They review useful vocabulary and play Tic-Tac-Toe, focusing on the target vocabulary.
BUYING A TICKET
In this activity, students match questions (e.g. How long is the journey?) with answers (e.g. It’s about two hours.) related to getting a ticket. They then listen to a recording and check their answers. Afterwards, students examine the dialogues again and identify useful vocabulary (e.g. return ticket, change, direct train). Next, they listen to the recording again without looking at the text. As it stops after each question, students answer them. Then, they listen to the answer and compare. Following that, students act out conversations between a passenger and a ticket clerk using information on cards.
TALKING TO OTHER PASSENGERS
Students examine sentences passengers say (e.g. Excuse me, could I get past?) with possible answers (e.g. Sure, go ahead.). They choose one incorrect answer. Then, students decide which sentences might be said by someone on the train, at the station, or both. Moving on, they cover the text and complete the sentences the way they remember them. Students then check their answers. Afterwards, they play Tic-Tac-Toe by matching common travel questions with their correct responses. Next, students get cards and do travel role-plays in pairs.
TAKING A TAXI
Students listen to a conversation between a passenger and a taxi driver and decide if some sentences are true or false. They then choose the correct options to complete a conversation between a passenger and a taxi driver. Afterwards, students listen to the conversation again and check their answers. Next, they use different information to rewrite the dialogue from the previous task. Finally, they role-play conversations between a passenger and a taxi driver, using cards with more information.
ASKING FOR DIRECTIONS
Students order a conversation about getting directions. They then identify various useful phrases (e.g. get off the bus, towards the airport, let me think). Afterwards, in pairs, students read out the dialogue from the previous task, using their own ideas to replace some information. Following that, they do travel role-plays where they practise asking for and giving directions.
