ESL lesson on passive structures

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this ESL lesson on passive structures are to:

  • talk about the front end and back end;
  • learn and practise the passive voice;
  • watch a video on website development.

Students talk about websites and their usability with this lesson. They watch a video about website design, discuss front-end and back-end development, and share their opinions. Students work with passive structures, imagine a social media account for a restaurant and answer questions about it. They also evaluate websites, make suggestions for improvement and practise collocations for social media management.

WARM-UP AND VIDEO

This ESL lesson on passive structures begins with a warm-up. Students think of websites for different categories (e.g. news, shopping, entertainment). They also say how often they visit each website. Following that, students discuss questions about website usability. They then watch a video about website creation. Afterwards, students match statements with parts of a computer system (front end and back end). Next, they watch the video again, find the wrong words in sentences and correct them. After that, students discuss front-end and back-end development. Then, they say if they agree or disagree with statements about website creation and development trends (e.g. In the future, the code for websites will be written by AI.).

PASSIVE STRUCTURES AND DISCUSSION

In this part of the ESL lesson on passive structures, students read passive sentences (e.g. Websites were created by web developers.) and do tasks. They analyse the statements and explore active and passive structures. Next, students imagine that a restaurant has launched its website. They complete gaps in the sentences about the restaurant website with the passive forms of verbs according to each situation (e.g. was chosen, are taken, will be improved). Afterwards, students imagine a social media account was created for the restaurant. They answer questions using collocations for media management (e.g. advertise the restaurant, post photos of the restaurant, answer followers’ questions) or their own ideas. Students also use the passive voice. Finally, they look at two websites and do the tasks related to website evaluation and improvement suggestions.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students find and correct mistakes in sentences about different situations. They then add some details to each sentence using the passive voice. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
