| LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this ESL lesson about siblings are to:
- discuss family dynamics and their impact on achievement;
- review vocabulary for talking about family and accomplishments;
- read an article exploring the link between siblings and success.
In this lesson, students discuss what influences a person’s professional success. They explore the definition of ‘siblings’, read an article about success and birth order and practise vocabulary for family dynamics (e.g. spouse, wealthy, impact). Students share their experiences and opinions, talk about the story of two siblings and debate life paths. They discuss the positive and negative impact people can have on each other’s education and careers.
WARM-UP AND READING PRACTICE
This ESL lesson about siblings starts with a warm-up. Students look at words and phrases (e.g. personality, luck, life experiences) and say which might have the biggest influence on a person’s professional success. They explain their choices. After that, students read the title of an article examining how birth order influences success. They then explore the definition of ‘siblings’ and guess what’s in the article. Moving on, students read the first part of the article and say if they agree with what the author thinks about the eldest, the middle and the youngest siblings. Afterwards, they read definitions and find words (e.g. accurate, easy-going, spouse) that match them in the text from the previous exercise. Then, students complete sentences about family memories with the words from the previous exercises. Next, students choose three sentences and say if they are true about them or people they know.
MORE READING AND DISCUSSION
In this part of this ESL lesson about siblings, students read one more section of the article and identify what each pronoun ‘this’ refers to. Afterwards, they read a story about two siblings who moved from India to the UK. First, students brainstorm how their relationship impacted each other’s professional success. Then, they read the next part of the article and compare it with their ideas. Following that, students read sentences about family success and sibling dynamics. They decide if the sentences are true or false and correct the false ones. Moving on, students discuss questions about sibling relationships and career choices. Finally, they say one positive and one negative impact different people (parents, spouse and children) might have on a person’s education or career. Students give examples.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This ESL lesson on siblings also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete questions with the target vocabulary from the lesson. They then choose three questions to answer. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
