Vocabulary LabUnlimited Plan

This is a Vocabulary Lab worksheet. With it, students are introduced to a set of vocabulary on a specific topic and practise it through controlled activities, speaking tasks and games. Learn more about it here.

WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY

This lesson focuses on football vocabulary and starts with a warm-up. Students read quotes about football and say which they like best and why. After that, they discuss questions about their personal interests and the popularity of football. Moving on, students read statements from different people involved in football and choose the role (e.g. attacker, coach, defender) that best describes each person. They then label people in an image without looking at the vocabulary from the previous task. Next, students check their answers. Afterwards, they discuss football roles, refereeing challenges and fan dynamics.

MORE VOCABULARY AND VIDEO

In this part of the lesson, students read sentences featuring football vocabulary (e.g. pass, dribble, shoot). They then match the verbs with their definitions. Following that, students complete sentences about different types of players (e.g. midfielder, attacker, goalkeeper) with the verbs and phrases from the previous task in the correct form. Moving on, they watch a video of football match highlights and tick the actions (e.g. a defender heads the ball and falls to the ground) they can see in it. Then, students discuss questions about iconic matches and the role of football commentators. Finally, they use the target vocabulary to commentate on some photos, describing what happened, what is happening and what will happen next.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students revise football vocabulary by filling in the gaps to complete football commentaries. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
