LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

  • talk about accommodation and trends in hotel rooms;
  • practise vocabulary for talking about the hotel industry;
  • watch part of a video on hotel space optimization and guest experience.

In this lesson, students discuss hotel amenities, explore adjectives to describe a hotel room (e.g. lavish, functional, cramped) and talk about room features, comfort and design. They watch a video excerpt (to 03:03) on hotel space optimization, debate trends in hotel rooms and review collocations for discussing the hotel industry (e.g. opt out of, pricing parameters, average occupancy). Students also share their opinions and talk about trends in short-term accommodations.

WARM-UP AND VIDEO

This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students choose a traveller profile (e.g. someone on holiday) and comment on which hotel amenities (e.g. minibar in the room) might be most important for them and why. After that, they look at adjectives to describe a hotel room (e.g. lavish, spacious, functional) and explain what they think they mean. Then, students engage in talking about the hotel industry, room features and space design. Moving on, they watch the first part of a video about US hotels and choose the statement that best summarises it. Afterwards, students watch the second part of the video and make notes about points related to modern hotel room trends. They then discuss questions about the shift in modern hospitality standards. Next, students complete sentences by choosing the correct words in gaps. They watch parts of the video again and check their answers.

USEFUL COLLOCATIONS AND DISCUSSION

In this part of the lesson, students look at sets of collocations and phrases (e.g. opt for, opt out of, opt against, opt with) and find the incorrect ones. After that, they complete sentences about challenges, operational strategies and market trends in the modern hotel industry. Students use the collocations from the previous task and change the forms of some words when needed. Moving on, they choose four statements from the previous exercise, explain to what extent they agree with them and engage in talking about the hotel industry. Finally, students look at different types of short-term accommodation (e.g. homestays, campsites, holiday resorts). They do tasks where they share personal preferences and evaluate trends in accommodation and hotel services.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students use words for talking about the hotel industry to rewrite sentences without changing their meaning. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
