LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

• learn and practise music vocabulary;
• discuss preferences, opinions and experiences about music-related topics.

With this lesson, students talk about their music preferences, work with music-related vocabulary (e.g. lead singer, piano, playlist) and share their experiences. They discuss their opinions, explore the way people access and enjoy music today and describe photos involving music. Students also work in pairs and practise asking and answering questions about different music themes. 

WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY

This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students discuss questions about personal music tastes and habits. After that, they look at sentences and match words for talking about music events (e.g. audience, choir, live performance) with their definitions. Next, students work with more music vocabulary and name instruments in English (e.g. drums, saxophone, tambourine). Afterwards, they think about a music event they’ve been to or watched on TV or online. Students give details about it using the target vocabulary from the lesson. Moving on, they match the halves of sentences about how people discover and listen to music today. Then, students complete the gaps in topics involving music (e.g. a famous singer who is also a songwriter), using the words from the previous exercise (e.g. songwriter, tune, lyrics). They then choose four points and tell their partner about them. 

VOCABULARY PRACTICE AND DISCUSSION

In this part of the lesson, students work in pairs and focus on practising music vocabulary. They choose two areas (e.g. music and learning English, using AI to create music) and write two statements and/or questions for each, using the target vocabulary from the lesson. They then swap them with their partner and take turns to respond. Finally, in pairs, students look at photos involving music (e.g. a person listening to music on their phone) and pick two of them. They talk about each one for a minute. Students take turns talking about the pictures while their partner writes down the words from the lesson that they use in their descriptions. 

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students choose the correct option in sentences with music vocabulary. They then choose four of them to finish with their own ideas. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
