Lost and found (prepositions of place)

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this ESL lesson on prepositions of place are to:

• discuss experiences of losing or finding items;
• learn and practise prepositions of place;
• watch a video about things left at an airport.

Students talk about losing and finding things, watch a video (from 00:22) about an airport lost and found and share their own stories. They work with prepositions of place (e.g. in front of, next to, between), describe where people and things are in photos and listen to a conversation between friends. Students also play a guessing game where they review prepositions of place.

WARM-UP AND VIDEO

This ESL lesson on prepositions of place starts with a warm-up. Students discuss losing and finding things. After that, they look at items left at the airport (e.g. a bike, a refrigerator) and discuss why people travelled with them. Then, students watch a video and decide which items from the previous task are mentioned. They also note one detail for each item. Afterwards, students discuss questions about lost items at airports. Following that, they say if they have ever been in situations where they lost or found things (e.g. An airline lost your luggage). Students then match descriptions (e.g. The book could be behind him) with places in a photo of two friends at the airport. Next, they listen to a conversation between them and say where the book was. Moving on, students listen to the conversation again and choose the words they hear. 

PREPOSITIONS OF PLACE

In this part of the ESL lesson on prepositions of place, students look at photos and complete their descriptions with prepositions of place (e.g. behind, between, on). They then think about the room and the building they are in. Students say where the things and people are (e.g. the teacher, the laptop, the phone), using correct prepositions (e.g. behind me, between me and…, in front of me). Afterwards, they play a game where Student A chooses a place in a photo to hide a key. Student B guesses the place, using clues. Then, they switch roles.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This ESL lesson on prepositions of place also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students describe photos using prepositions of place. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
