expressions of frequency

STUDENTS WATCH THE VIDEO TO 01:06

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson on expressions of frequency are to:

  • discuss how people spend their time;
  • watch part of a video on teenagers’ phone routine;
  • learn and practise time expressions.

Students talk about things they do every day, watch part of a video (to 01:06) about phone habits and share how much time they spend on their phones. They explore expressions of frequency (e.g. every Friday afternoon, twice a month, a lot of time), say how often they prefer to do different activities and discuss a graph showing how people spend their time. Students also talk about what they would do during a perfect week.

WARM-UP AND EXPRESSIONS OF FREQUENCY

This lesson begins with a warm-up. Students list five things they do every day. They then watch part of the video (01:06) where teenagers discuss their phone habits. Before watching, students guess how much time teens spend on phones daily. They watch the video and check the answer. Then, students watch it again and choose the words they hear to complete phrases (e.g. probably two or three hours a/in day). Following that, they choose an option and complete sentences with information about their personal phone use. Moving on, students match sentences containing expressions of frequency (e.g. once a week, twice a month, three times a day) with pictures. After that, they make time expressions using given words (month / a / once – once a month). Then, students talk about different activities and how often they would like to do them by choosing options.

DISCUSSION AND MORE PRACTICE

At this point in the lesson, students choose activities from a list (e.g. read the news, listen to music, have a shower) and say how often they do them. They use the target expressions of frequency from the lesson (e.g. every day, once a week, three times a month) and add details. After that, students look at a graph showing how people spend their time every day and talk about the information they see there. They add details about themselves and the people they know. Next, they complete a weekly schedule with activities they would do during a perfect week. Then, students answer questions about how often, how long, and with whom they do it.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students choose the correct option in sentences about how often people did things in the past. Then, they complete sentences with their own ideas about now. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
