LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this beginner lesson on foods and drinks are to:
- discuss food choices and tastes;
- learn and practise vocabulary for discussing meals;
- read and work with a text about someone’s eating habits and food choices.
Students talk about eating habits and preferences with this lesson. They explore food-related vocabulary (soda, nuts, cook), read a text about a person’s daily meals, do comprehension activities and discuss food choices (e.g. David likes tea when it’s cold.). Students also share their preferences for food and meals.
VOCABULARY AND READING
This beginner lesson on foods and drinks starts with a warm-up. Students complete the sentence ‘Good food for good mood is…’ with food items. After that, they match food pictures with words (e.g. soda, nuts, crisps) in sentences about eating and drinking. Next, students read a text about someone’s daily meals and food preferences and say what it is about. Following that, they look at the text again and complete the gaps with the sentences from the previous task (e.g. My favourite dessert is ice cream.). Afterwards, students revisit the text and say if sentences are true or false (e.g. David only eats healthy food.). They then complete sentences about David with the correct form of verbs – positive or negative (e.g. David doesn’t drink (drink) soda. David often cooks (cook) at home.).
DISCUSSION
In this part of the beginner lesson on foods and drinks, students complete gaps in statements about opinions on food (e.g. Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day.) using the target vocabulary from the lesson (e.g. meal, mood, snack). Afterwards, students say whether the sentences are true for them. Following that, they discuss questions about their food choices and eating routines. Finally, students complete sentences about food habits and preferences (e.g. When I want to have a healthy lunch, I…) with verbs (e.g. cook, drink, eat) and different food or drinks. They also add details if possible.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete a text about someone’s eating habits with their own ideas. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
