LESSON OVERVIEW

Try out this ESL lesson about dancing to teach students some expressive phrases. In the lesson students will also watch a video and practise the advanced use of pronouns. 

VOCABULARY & VIDEO

This ESL lesson about dancing starts with a warm-up activity in which students answer some questions about their dancing experience. Then, students look at a list of phrases (e.g. bust a move, keep to the beat, be tightly bound) and decide which of them mean to dance and which to unite. Next, students read some texts about virtual dancing sessions and use the phrases to paraphrase the texts. They continue on with a short discussion and then the video. 

While watching the video for the first time, students need to list the reasons people like dancing. They also watch a part of the video for the second time and complete gaps in a text about collective effervescence. 

PRONOUNS & DISCUSSION

In the second part of the ESL lesson about dancing, students look at some statements and decide to what extent they agree with them. The statements refer to dancing and to the ideas from the video. Then, students read sentences paying attention to bolded pronouns. They need to choose when the pronouns are used to refer to people in general, and when they are used to refer to a specific group of people. They also find the sentence which is most formal. After that, students practise the use of pronouns by completing some sentences about dancing. Finally, students choose some areas of life, like career, health or relationships, and elaborate on how one might improve them by taking up dancing.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This ESL lesson about dancing includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. It’s available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it, cut it up and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
