LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

  • read an article about the pros and cons of foraging for food;
  • talk about wild harvesting and share perspectives;
  • practise advanced vocabulary to debate foraging.

In this CRC lesson, students explore a quote and read about food’s origins, work with vocabulary for describing resources (e.g. coveted, elusive, sparse) and give examples of local species and food. They use the target vocabulary for discussing the benefits and risks of foraging, talk about their experiences, regulations and the popularity of this practice.

This is a Critical Reading Club worksheet. With this format, students need to read an online article at home and do the exercises in the classroom. Learn more about how to use such worksheets and their benefits in our post.

ACTIVITIES

This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students look at a quote from the article they read at home about feeling disconnected from our food’s origins and say how relatable the feeling is. They then read statements about different wild resources (e.g. This seaweed is ubiquitous along the coastline.) and explain what they think some words mean (e.g. prolific, ubiquitous, plentiful). Afterwards, they think of examples for various local nature and food (e.g. a highly coveted food) and give details. Moving on, students examine the title of the article they read and say what benefits and risks they remember being mentioned. They use the target vocabulary from the lesson. Following that, students look at foods that people forage (e.g. seaweed, wild berries, wild garlic) and discuss foraging experiences, rules and traditions. Finally, they say to what extent they agree with different opinions on foraging and explain why.
