ESL lesson on performing arts

Students watch the video to 01:30

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this ESL lesson on performing arts are to:

  • talk about social events and live performances;
  • practise words and phrases related to live entertainment;
  • watch a video about the Edinburgh Fringe festival.

In this lesson, students share their experiences going out to enjoy live entertainment. They review vocabulary for different performances (e.g. gig, poetry slam, stand-up comedy), explore vowel sounds (e.g. /ɜː/, /eɪ/, /ɔː/) and discuss their preferences. Students choose live events for different social groups, watch a video about an arts festival (to 01:30) and talk about performing and arts festivals. They also work in pairs, organising a festival.

WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY

This ESL lesson on performing arts starts with a warm-up. Students look at different activities (go to a concert, go to the theatre and go dancing) and talk about the last time they did it, giving details. After that, they match sentences about entertainment events containing useful words and phrases (e.g. play, stand-up comedy, ballet show). Moving on, students work on pronunciation by matching words (e.g. ballet) to their correct vowel sounds (e.g. /eɪ/). Following that, they use the words from the previous exercise to complete the gaps in pairs of entertainment options (e.g. act in a play in your local theatre OR dance in a ballet show in your local theatre). Next, students say which option they would choose and why.

VIDEO AND DISCUSSION

In this part of this ESL lesson on performing arts, students look at people in different scenarios (e.g. a group of colleagues after work), say what types of shows they would take them to and give reasons. They then watch a video about an arts festival called the Edinburgh Fringe. First, students examine a quote and guess what it means. Next, they watch the video and check. Moving on, students read sentences about the festival in the video and complete the gaps with numbers. Afterwards, they watch the video again and check their answers. Following that, students discuss theatre festivals, stage experiences and performing. Finally, they work in pairs. Students imagine they want to organise a festival together and discuss seven ideas (e.g. Adventure Planet, Culture Connection, Family Fun Fest). Then, they do tasks where they choose the best concept and develop the festival collaboratively

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This ESL lesson on performing arts also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete the words with the missing letters in sentences featuring key elements associated with live performance. They then add more points to each sentence. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
