In this worksheet for healthcare professionals students learn words and collocations to talk about healthcare professions and health problems, watch a video in which a nurse talks about her job, and practise pronunciation.
VOCABULARY & PRONUNCIATION
As a warm-up activity students need to come up with jobs that fit into the category ‘healthcare professionals’. Then, they match halves to create collocations (e.g. call emergency services, suffer from a disease). Students’ next task is to answer some questions using the collocations from the previous exercise. After that, students complete seven job descriptions with the words from the collocations. The jobs include a pharmacist, a paramedic, a dietician, etc. Then, students listen to some of the words from previous exercises and underline the stressed syllables (e.g. psychiatrist, diagnose, prescribe). They also read the words or repeat after the teacher. Finally, as this can be a useful worksheet for healthcare professionals, students talk about the occupations introduced in the lesson. They list the challenges of the jobs, comment on the qualities necessary to do some of them, etc.
VIDEO & SPEAKING
In this part of the lesson students watch the video for the first time and decide who it was made for. They need to provide reasons for their answers. During the second viewing, students look at pairs of similar words and phrases (e.g. first person that greets the patient and first person that sees the patient) and need to choose the one in each pair which the nurse said in the video. After that, they discuss some questions about the video. In the last task of this vocabulary lesson plan students have to imagine that they are making a video to encourage people to become healthcare professionals. They choose one of the jobs from the lesson and discuss what they want to include in the video. There are some questions to guide them.

What a fantastic lesson! My B1 student is studying medicine and this was simple, yet challenging, enough for her. Love the pronunciation part – but found there was lag on opening up the sound clip (my only gripe).
