LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson are to:
- discuss phone habits and digital routine;
- practise phones and technology vocabulary;
- examine the pronunciation of regular past-tense verbs;
- describe app functions and practice giving tech-related advice.
In this lesson, students talk about how often they use their phones for different activities. They explore words and phrases related to smartphones and technology (e.g. charger, low battery, notifications), share their experiences and review useful verbs (e.g. receive, reply to, search for). Students listen to a recording, practice the pronunciation of regular past-tense verbs and work in pairs. They describe and guess digital apps and play an advice bingo game to solve everyday tech problems.

This is a Vocabulary Lab worksheet. With it, students are introduced to a set of vocabulary on a specific topic and practise it through controlled activities, speaking tasks and games. Learn more about it here.
WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY
This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students tick how often they use their phone for different activities (e.g. work, games, films and music). They then compare their answers with others. Moving on, students look at statements about smartphone use and match words (e.g. low battery, group chats, apps) with pictures. Afterwards, they complete sentences with phones and technology vocabulary from the previous exercise. Following that, students examine the sentences from the previous exercise again and say whether they are true or false about them. Next, they use verbs to complete the gaps in pairs of phrases for digital tasks (e.g. answer the phone at work, answer the phone when it rings). Then, students label pictures with the verbs they used previously.
PRONUNCIATION AND DISCUSSION
In this part of the lesson, students listen to the target verbs used in Past Simple. They categorise them according to the pronunciation of the ‘-ed’ ending (/-d/, /-t/, /-ɪd/). Then, students examine the pairs of phrases from the lesson and choose one activity in each. They say when they last did it and add details. After that, in pairs, Student A describes what they can and cannot do using an app (e.g. WhatsApp) without naming it. They use phones and technology vocabulary. Student B guesses the app. They swap roles and repeat three times. Finally, in pairs, Student A reads aloud problems from their card. Student B offers advice using target vocabulary from a bingo card, crossing off words as they go. After two minutes, they swap roles with new cards. The student with the most crossed-out words at the end wins.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete sentences with phones and technology vocabulary. They then choose two sentences which are not true about them and change them so that they are true. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
