talking about the office

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

  • engage in talking about the office;
  • practise key office vocabulary;
  • listen to and analyse a recording of colleagues talking at work.

Students reflect on things people do in the office, work with an office plan and review words for rooms (e.g. reception area, phone booths, workstations). They read short texts about the function of office rooms, discuss their rules and uses and compare options in different contexts. Students explore vocabulary for office activities (e.g. book the room, prepare reports, print a document), talk about their experiences and listen to a recording where employees have a conversation in the office. They also do a role-play, practising asking and answering office questions.

WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY

This lesson focuses on talking about the office and starts with a warm-up. Students use a picture to list things people usually do in the office. After that, they examine an office plan featuring the names of the rooms (e.g. conference room, toilets, break room). Students say five things about the office. Next, they read texts about office spaces. Students match them with the parts of the office in the plan from the previous task. Afterwards, they answer questions about the uses of office areas. Moving on, students examine pairs of contrasting scenarios involving the office (e.g. working in a phone booth OR working at a workstation). They think of situations where each option works best. Following that, students look at texts and choose pictures that show the meaning of phrases for workplace activities (e.g. book the room, prepare reports, print a document).

DISCUSSION AND LISTENING PRACTICE

In this part of the lesson, students engage in talking about the office more. They answer questions about their experiences (e.g. When was the last time you printed a document or a photo?). Moving on, they listen to a recording of a conversation between two employees in the office. Students write down two things they learned about this office and the people in it. Following that, they examine part of the conversation and guess which words are missing in the gaps. Next, students listen to the recording again and check. Afterwards, they listen to the recording again and, after pauses, answer the question they hear. Finally, students role-play being colleagues working at the same office from the recording. They take turns asking and answering questions from cards and checking their partner’s response

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students fill the gaps in sentences using vocabulary for talking about the office. They then match them to create complete thoughts. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
