ESL lesson on food trends

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this ESL lesson on food trends are to:

  • practise advanced adjectives for food taste and texture;
  • discuss and watch a video about food trends;
  • learn phrases about trends and popularity.

Students talk about superfoods, explore vocabulary to describe tastes and textures (e.g. pungent, gelatinous, crumbly) and discuss eating habits. They watch a video about a viral chocolate bar and explore how food trends spread. Students also study expressions related to popularity (e.g. a flash in the pan, catch on with, die down) and reflect on popular online food content.

WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY

This ESL lesson on food trends starts with a warm-up. Students think of examples of food for different categories (e.g. foods that are always in your diet or kitchen). After that, they look at the close-ups of superfoods (e.g. brown flax seeds, oat flakes, strawberries) and say what they are. Then, students brainstorm adjectives to describe each food. Moving on, they match halves to create sentences about food tastes and textures. Afterwards, students add more foods or ingredients that could be described using the adjectives in the statements (e.g. zesty, gritty, cloying). Following that, they discuss questions about opinions and habits related to superfoods.

VIDEO AND MORE VOCABULARY

In this part of this ESL lesson on food trends, students watch a video about a Dubai chocolate bar that went viral. Before they do, students read a comment about it and guess what it is. They then watch the video and take notes on how the company started and how production has changed. Afterwards, students discuss questions about opinions and experiences with viral food trends. Following that, they complete gaps with a preposition and create phrases about trend popularity (e.g. jumping on the bandwagon, through word of mouth, in vogue) in statements about how food fads grow and change over time. Next, students choose statements and elaborate on them. Finally, they look at different types of online food content (e.g. meal prep videos) and discuss points related to their popularity.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students replace parts of statements with the target adjectives from the lesson. They then respond to the statements using phrases about trend popularity (e.g. catch on with, die down, in vogue). The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.

    Hello, there! Great worksheet, Thanks! One thing, though: in exercise 2, picture 6, the answer key says ‘chia seeds,’ but it’s a picture of beans. Is that right?

    1. Kinga

      Thanks for the comment! The close-up can definitely be confusing, but it does show chia seeds when you view the full-size photo. You can find the link to it in the Teacher notes in the PDF version, or in the speaker notes in the e-lesson. We hope it’s clear now!
