vocabulary for discussing marketing

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

  • talk about accidental marketing and brand success;
  • practise vocabulary for discussing marketing;
  • watch a video on a product’s viral success.

With this lesson, students talk about marketing, read examples of accidental marketing and explore idioms and phrasal verbs related to the topic (e.g. a stroke of luck, scope out, take a hit). They discuss brand success, share their opinions and watch a video on how a product went viral. Students also talk about consumer behaviour, read a follow-up to the video’s product story and describe the journey of products, brands or trends using the target vocabulary from the lesson.

WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY FOR DISCUSSING MARKETING

This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students look at some words (e.g. accident, network, luck, user-generated content) and briefly explain how they might be related to marketing. After that, they read texts about examples of accidental marketing and define vocabulary for discussing marketing and brand success (e.g. cement one’s position, hit the ground running, a stroke of luck). Next, students look at the cases of accidental marketing again and discuss questions about unexpected marketing success stories. Afterwards, they correct the mistakes in sentences about the role of luck and strategy in brand success. Students then read the statements and say if they agree or disagree, justifying their opinion

VIDEO AND DISCUSSION

In this part of the lesson, students watch a video about a product going viral. They first guess how a burning car could link to marketing, then watch the video to check their ideas. After that, students watch the second part of the video (to 02:28) and describe other factors behind the brand’s rise. Next, they discuss viral products and consumer behaviour. Students then read a follow-up to the Stanley Cup story and share their thoughts. Afterwards, they complete pairs of sentences about marketing strategies and create idioms and phrasal verbs (e.g. tap into, buy into). Following that, students pick three statements and share their reasons for agreeing or disagreeing with them. Finally, students choose a viral product, brand, or trend and describe its journey using prompts to analyse its marketing impact. They also use the vocabulary for discussing marketing from the lesson.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students match verbs with noun phrases and use their correct form to complete sentences. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.

    If you’ve got that 1 or 2 students who can do it, this one’s awesome.

    Most people know something or a lot about the Stanley “accidental” case. Thank you for arranging this into a teachable flow.
