talking about friends

Students watch the video from 00:44 to 03:02

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

  • engage in talking about friends, their qualities and dynamics;
  • practise useful vocabulary for discussing friendships;
  • watch part of a video and learn about types of friends.

In this lesson, students reflect on qualities of a friend, explore expressions with adverbs and adjectives (e.g. boundlessly kind, effortlessly cool, painfully shy) and share their experiences. They learn about different types of friends (e.g. Social Butterfly, Secret-Keeper, Mother Figure), watch a portion of a video (00:44-03:02) and discuss friendship from various perspectives. Students also work with phrases for social interactions (e.g. patch things up, pick on, mess around), give their opinions on friendship dynamics and work in pairs, asking and answering questions about values and reactions.

WARM-UP AND VIDEO

This lesson focuses on talking about friends and starts with a warm-up. Students write down the most important qualities they look for in a friend and explain their choice. After that, they read sentences describing friends and choose the most appropriate adverb to complete expressions with the adjectives (e.g. fiercely loyal, outrageously funny, brutally honest). Moving on, students look at the sentences from the previous task again and say if they have any similar friends. They give details. Afterwards, students look at three types of friends (Social Butterfly, Fearless Adventurer and Secret-Keeper) and discuss questions about them, using expressions with adverbs and adjectives. Next, they match types of friends with the two characteristics they associate with each type. Students then watch part of a video about the topic to check their answers. Following that, they discuss questions about friendship types and qualities.

USEFUL PHRASES AND DISCUSSION

In this part of the lesson, students engage in talking about friends more. They read and complete descriptions of two other kinds of friends (Mother Figure and Good Older Sibling). Students fill in gaps with prepositions to create phrases related to different behaviours in relationships (e.g. take someone under your wing, rub off on someone, patch things up). Next, they read meanings and identify the phrases in the descriptions. After that, students read statements about friendship dynamics and relationships and say if they agree or disagree. They give reasons. Finally, students get cards with questions about ways people act with friends. They work in pairs, asking each other the questions. Based on their partner’s answers, students decide which type of friend their partner best fits and justify their choice. Their partner can agree or disagree with their conclusion.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete gaps with adverbs. They then add one more sentence to continue each situation, using the target phrases from the lesson. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
