LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson on possessives for beginners are to:

• talk about common objects and people in the family;
• practise vocabulary for everyday items and possessive adjectives;
• identify and describe people in photos.

In this lesson, students discuss items in their bag and on their desk, explore vocabulary for common objects (e.g. cup, glasses, photo) and work with texts describing people’s lives. They practise reading comprehension skills, review possessive adjectives in context and answer ‘whose’ questions. Students also examine photos and talk about people they know.

WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY

This lesson focuses on possessives for beginners and starts with a warm-up. Students choose objects on their desk or in their bag and complete sentences about them. After that, they look at objects in pictures (e.g. tablet, cup, wallet) and say whether they were mentioned in the previous exercise. Then, students say if they have any of the things in their bag or on their desk. Afterwards, they complete sentences with the words from the previous task (e.g. glasses, notebook, photo). Moving on, students read different facts about two people, Lina and Kris. They say who each point is about. Next, students add one more sentence from the previous exercise to each point. Following that, they answer questions (e.g. Do they have a dog?) about the texts from the previous task with yes or no.

READING PRACTICE AND POSSESSIVES FOR BEGINNERS

In this part of the lesson, students complete sentences (e.g. … have/has a big house) about the people they know and add details. They then read a text describing a photo and say how many people are in it. Following that, students read the text again and find examples for different categories (e.g. colour, country, place). Afterwards, they look at two photos and say which one matches the description from the previous exercise. Then, students examine the text again and check their answer. Next, they look at the correct photo of the family and name the people. Moving on, students talk about the photo by answering ‘whose’ questions (e.g. whose cup is it?). After that, they look at the text or at the correct photo once again. Students imagine one of the people in the photo is talking about the picture and continue what he says.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students use objects in pictures and the correct possessives for beginners to complete gaps in dialogues. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
