LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson on the uses of AI are to:
- talk about technology and AI from various perspectives;
- practise words and collocations related to AI;
- watch a video about using AI to learn something.
In this lesson, students take a mini-quiz about AI, explore vocabulary related to its use (e.g. correct, prompt, chat) and share their opinions on artificial intelligence. They watch a video about a person who uses AI to learn a new skill, discuss how they interact with AI and technology and work with AI prompts to help solve problems. Students also reflect on AI and non-AI solutions, review collocations related to common actions with technology (e.g. write a prompt, translate a text, Google information) and practise extended speaking in pairs.
WARM-UP AND VIDEO
This lesson on the uses of AI starts with a warm-up. Students do a two-question quiz about AI. Then, they say what else they know about AI. After that, students look at sentences about daily tech use and match words related to AI (e.g. generate, explain, google) with their meanings. Moving on, they use sentence endings to continue the sentences from the previous exercise (e.g. AI can generate pretty images as well as fun videos and beautiful songs). Students then choose three of the sentences they created in the previous task and say if they agree with them. They explain why and give examples. Afterwards, students watch a video and choose a sentence that describes what it is about. Following that, they watch the video again and match the questions to the situations in which the person in the video asks them.
COLLOCATIONS AND DISCUSSION
In this part of this lesson on the uses of AI, students discuss questions about personal habits with AI and technology. Afterwards, they look at photos showing different problems (e.g. a person holding a broken phone). Students write prompts for AI to help them solve each issue. Following that, they brainstorm two things people can do in various situations (e.g. you want to become a social media influencer), one with AI and one without. Students use collocations related to AI (e.g. chat with AI, create online content, correct mistakes). Finally, they work in pairs. Student A chooses a topic (e.g. the first time you googled something) and talks about it for one minute. Student B listens and asks a follow-up question. They then swap roles and continue until they have discussed three topics each.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson on the uses of AI also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete letters to create words. They then choose three sentences and say what happened next. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
