NEWS SUMMARY

Scientists exploring Angola’s remote Lisima Plateau have discovered many species that were previously unknown to science. These include eight new dragonfly species, three new grasshopper species, around 60 new butterflies and moths, an armoured cricket that can spray liquid at predators and a newly identified caterpillar and butterfly species. Researchers also found two unusual spiders – a ladybird orb-web spider and the one that glows under ultraviolet (UV) light.

Scientists are working to identify and record species around the world because many plants and animals are at risk of extinction. Experts estimate that there are about 8.7 million species on Earth, but only 1.5 million have been identified by science. The wildlife of the Lisima Plateau is threatened by deforestation, diamond mining and farming practices. The discoveries highlight both the richness of the region’s biodiversity and the importance of protecting it.
