LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this advanced lesson on airports are to:
- talk about airport logistics, problems and passenger experience;
- practise vocabulary for airport operations;
- watch a video about an alternative passenger transfer method;
- role-play airport situations.
In this lesson, students talk about airport problems and solutions and explore vocabulary for airport operations (e.g. allocate, clear somebody, convey). They share their experiences and opinions involving airport procedures, read about different types of passengers at the airport and watch a video about an alternative way of moving passengers between the gate and the aircraft. Students work with phrases for air travel problems and reactions (e.g. no hiccups, one thing after another, par for the course) and role-play airport situations.
WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY
This advanced lesson on airports starts with a warm-up. Students examine different processes that take place at an airport (e.g. check-in, security screening, boarding). They say how long they usually take and why their duration may sometimes be affected. Afterwards, students read airport solutions (e.g. airports spread arrivals and departures over time) and discuss what problems they are designed to solve. Moving on, they look at the sentences from the previous exercise again and find words and phrases with the same meaning as verbs (e.g. allocate, clear, convey). Following that, students discuss experiences and opinions about airport operations. Next, they read about different types of passengers at the airport (e.g. airport dad, airport autopilot, airport ambler). Students evaluate them and how they handle travel problems.
VIDEO AND ROLE-PLAY
In the second part of this advanced lesson on airports, students watch a video about an alternative way of transporting passengers at airports. First, they brainstorm ways it can happen. Then, students watch the first part of the video and say what PTV (Passenger Transport Vehicle) stands for, and how it can be used. Afterwards, they watch the rest of the video and choose the correct answers about PTVs. Moving on, students finish statements about PTVs at airports with their ideas. Next, they examine sentences and choose the correct words to create phrases for air travel problems (e.g. be left in limbo, lose one’s cool). Then, students choose two statements they agree with and two they disagree with. They justify their choice. Finally, in pairs, students take a role card (e.g. a passenger) and argue their perspective to reach an outcome. They use the target vocabulary from the lesson.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This advanced lesson on airports also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete sentences using the target vocabulary from the lesson. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
