LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of the lesson are to:

• read an article about the benefits of boredom and understand the main points,
• learn phrases related to relaxing,
• have an in-depth discussion about boredom. 

This CRC lesson deals with the topic of boredom and its benefits. Students discuss different activities that are generally considered boring and learn phrases that mean to be less active or calmer. They also talk about the main points from the article and discuss various questions related to being bored.  

ACTIVITIES

In the warm-up activity, students look at different tasks and say if they would be bored if they did them for longer than ten minutes. They also decide whether it’s the same for most people. After that, students work with vocabulary. First, they choose the best word to create phrases which mean ‘be less active or calmer’ (e.g. take a breather, have some downtime, get into weekend mode, etc.). Then, students agree or disagree with the statements they completed and discuss what the reasoning behind them is. To practise the phrases more, students also provide examples of the activities. After that, students discuss the ideas from the article on how boredom can be beneficial. They share whether they find the ideas surprising. As a final activity, students answer the questions about boredom being overwhelming, whether being bored has changed compared to the past and how to make yourself bored to get creative.
