This speaking worksheet contains a lot of activities which allow students to discuss food and restaurant experiences. Students also watch a video about tipping and talk about different aspects of it.

WARM-UP & PICTURES

The lesson starts with an activity in which students look at different examples of food habits and discuss if they are true for them. They can also share some other examples that are not mentioned in the exercise. Then, students look at the pictures of four food experiences (blind tasting, eating in an underwater restaurant, campfire and cooking classes) and decide which of them they find the most interesting. Students also think about other memorable, terrible or surprising food and restaurant experiences and share the details with others. 

VIDEO & DISCUSSION

In this part of the lesson students watch the video about tipping and discuss it. Before they watch it, they think about three words that come to their mind when they hear the word ‘tipping’. Then, students watch the video which raises a question whether tipping is always necessary. After the video students have a comprehensive discussion. They talk about what they’ve seen in the video, their experience with tipping, other professions that should be tipped, tipping in different cultures and much more. Finally, they look at other recent changes and discuss food and restaurant trends. 

MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO DISCUSS FOOD AND RESTAURANTS

Here students discover and talk about other food and restaurant trends. They look at some ideas (e.g. adult-only restaurants, ghost kitchens, robots serving food, hyperlocal and sustainable restaurants that grow their own food, etc.) and share their opinions about them. As a wrap-up activity, students read the descriptions of three businesses (lab-grown meat, a special grocery shopping app, DIY meal kits) and decide if they’d invest in any of them. They also have to explain their decision.

    Sigh… I like these lessons, but they’re extremely short. No way they’d be enough for an hour. Nice content tho. Too bad you changed last year 🙁

      Hi Victoria! Remember that Speaking Class and CRC constitute only ~33% of the new content we publish, so the majority of the lessons are still the same ESL Brains lesson plans as always (if not better as we constantly add new stuff). The Speaking Class format, such as this lesson, has been created to cater for the needs of teachers that do conversation-style lessons and required some speaking-focused materials that are not just bunch of question on a given topic. So far, they have been recevied very well and many teachers find these type of lessons super useful. Sure, they’re not for everyone, which is understandable.

        LOVE and appreciate all your lesson plans but especially these Speaking Class lessons. This format is perfect for conversation-based classes and offers a lot of material to get students talking in more creative and extensive ways! Keep them coming!!

      Hi Victoria. I’ve used a couple of lesson plans with a group of 6 C1 / C2 adults with whom I have 90-minute lessons. I ensure that the students know what the topic of the lesson is before they come to it, and I assign some preparation homework so they arrive at the lesson prepared. I also think of some additional questions / points to be discussed, just to be safe.
      Obviously, it depends a lot on the students and how much they participate.
      Thanks to Justa for providing this lesson, I’ll be using it for sure!

    Thank you so much for this. My students love talking about food and food experiences!! I teach C1/C2 and B2/C1 and I’ve been finding your Speaking Class lessons extremely useful. I teach a 1hr class and can’t see a problem with making this last for the whole lesson. The video itself has some great vocabulary in it. I’ll let you know how it goes!
