| LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson are to:
- engage in discussing trends in the skincare market;
- practise phrases for talking about trends;
- watch a video on the economic rise of K-beauty.
In this lesson, students talk about skincare, explore trend-related vocabulary (e.g. be on the rise, booming business, emerging trend) and share opinions and experiences. They debate the modern skincare industry, watch a video about the Korean beauty market and reflect on its global rise. Students discuss various marketing practices and evaluate advertising methods. They also read and talk about examples of skincare product marketing.
WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY
This lesson starts with a warm-up where students talk about their experiences and opinions related to skincare. After that, they read information about skincare trends and match phrases for discussing trends (e.g. launch products, promote standards, sought after) with their definitions. Then, students look at the trends from the previous task again and discuss personal experiences and views on them. They then use the target vocabulary from the lesson to complete sentences about the skincare market. Next, students choose three ideas to comment on.
VIDEO AND DISCUSSION
In this part of the lesson, students watch a video about the Korean beauty industry and identify its purpose. Following that, they guess what different numbers refer to in the video. Then, students watch a part of the video again and check. Afterwards, they engage in discussing trends and the global rise of Korean beauty. Next, students read examples of advertising strategies and decide which marketing practices (e.g. cause marketing, fear-based marketing) are used in each. They then analyse and discuss them. Finally, students read about two examples of skincare product marketing and discuss brand campaigns, target audiences and ethical responsibilities.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students practise phrases for discussing trends by correcting the mistakes in sentences. They then say what the sentences might be about. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
