ESL lesson on big cities

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this ESL lesson on big cities are to:

  • discuss big cities, share their pros and cons and show preferences;
  • practise phrases for common city activities;
  • watch an unusual ad about a capital city.

With this lesson, students explore photos of capital cities, talk about what they can find there and watch a funny ad about Oslo. They discuss what they like and dislike about big cities, review useful phrases for city activities (e.g. window shop, go out for dinner, try local food) and express preferences for things to do in a city. Students also work in pairs, discuss cities they know and recommend places, considering pros and cons.

WARM-UP AND VIDEO

This ESL lesson on big cities begins with a warm-up where students examine pictures and identify the capital cities featured in them. They then say things they can find in a capital city. After that, students watch an unusual ad promoting Oslo, Norway’s capital, and choose the summary that best matches it. Moving on, they watch the video again and decide if some sentences are true or false. Students correct the false ones. Following that, they discuss the video and opinions about big cities. Afterwards, students look at the photos of city activities and choose the correct options to complete useful phrases (e.g. enjoy the view, try local food, use public transport). Then, they say which things they usually do first when they arrive in a big city.

VOCABULARY PRACTICE AND ROLE-PLAY

In this part of the ESL lesson on big cities, students examine pairs of city activities (e.g. explore the area on foot OR enjoy the views from a tall building). After that, students pick a city they’d like to visit, choose the activity options they prefer and explain. Moving on, they work in pairs. Students discuss the cities they live in or know, using the target phrases from the lesson. Then, they continue working in pairs. Student A chooses a person or people from a list (e.g. a solo traveller). They suggest which place (e.g. a quiet town by the sea, a big modern city) is the best for them to visit and name activities they can do there. Student B mentions one disadvantage of that place. They then swap roles.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This ESL lesson on big cities also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students match the halves of sentences about travel and city activities. They then choose three of the pieces of advice and explain why they are good or bad. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
