The changing face of tourism

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this advanced lesson on tourism are to:

• talk about tourism and travel trends;
• practise vocabulary related to current tourism changes;
• watch parts of a video about a modern travel trend.

In this lesson, students explore a quote about tourists, discuss changes in travel over the last few years and practise useful vocabulary for talking about travel trends (e.g. snowball into, roll out, revitalise). They share their opinions, watch video segments about how cruise islands are changing tourism and discuss changes in their own country. Students also work in pairs and role-play scenarios involving tourism issues.

WARM-UP AND VIDEO

This advanced lesson on tourism starts with a warm-up. Students read a quote about tourists and share their thoughts on whether they agree or disagree. After that, they look at different areas (e.g. transportation) and discuss travel changes in the past 15 years. Moving on, students complete gaps to create phrases (e.g. spring up, gain ground) in sentences about tourism trends. Next, they examine the trends again, discuss perfect holiday destinations and share their opinions. Afterwards, they watch a video about another travel trend. First, students look at the term ‘cruise islands’ and speculate on what the trend is about. They then watch the first part of the video (to 00:42) and check. Next, students speculate about different points (e.g. arguments in favour of private islands). Then, they watch the second part of the video (from 00:42 to 04:35) and list things for each point.

VOCABULARY AND ROLE-PLAY

In this part of this advanced lesson on tourism, students discuss questions about travel trends. Following that, they match sentences about the effects of tourism on destinations with their examples. Moving on, students look at the sentences from the previous exercise and find words and phrases about tourism issues (e.g. attenuate, commodify, exacerbate) for their synonyms. Following that, they look at the trends from the previous task again and say whether they have noticed any of those changes in their country. Then, students work in pairs. They get cards with scenarios related to tourism. They talk for two minutes, exchanging the arguments that support their position. Students use the target vocabulary from the lesson.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This advanced lesson on tourism also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete gaps with missing words. They then finish the sentences with their own ideas. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
