LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson are to:
- talk about searching and applying for jobs;
- explore vocabulary for job interviews;
- watch a video showing a recruitment interview.
With this lesson, students discuss job hunting and interview preparation. They explore possible interview questions and answers, share their experiences and practise vocabulary for job expectations and personal qualities. Students watch a video of a job interview and complete details from an applicant’s profile. They also work in pairs, role-playing interview questions and answers for different jobs (e.g. doctor, shop assistant, receptionist).
WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY FOR JOB INTERVIEWS
This lesson begins with a warm-up. Students discuss questions about job hunting and interview preparation. After that, they match interview questions (e.g. Do you prefer fixed or flexible working hours?) with their answers (e.g. I don’t mind working from 9 to 5, but I also like being able to choose when I work.). Moving on, students explore vocabulary for job interviews by completing words (e.g. flexible, strengths, responsibilities) in statements about job-related statistics. They then guess the missing numbers for each statement (e.g. __ % of employees prefer flexible over fixed working hours.). Afterwards, students look at the statistics from the previous task and discuss questions about job interviews and personal reflections.
VIDEO AND DISCUSSION
In this part of this lesson, students practise vocabulary for job interviews. They watch a video of a job interview and say who might find it helpful. Students then watch the first part of the video again and complete notes about the candidate (e.g. name, position applied for, work experience). After that, they watch the second part of the video again and write down the interviewer’s answers to questions about the working hours and their decision. Next, students discuss questions about job interview experiences and best practices. Finally, they pick a card and ask their partner to choose one of the two jobs (e.g. veterinarian, fitness coach). Then, students ask the question on the card (e.g. What are your strengths?). After answering, they swap roles and repeat the activity.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete gaps in sentences about personal work experiences with their ideas. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
