LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

  • read an article about the impact of modern tech convenience;
  • review and practise advanced adverbs;
  • discuss how technology affects everyday life.

With this lesson, students talk about how technology has changed their lives. They practise adverbs to discuss the downside of modern convenience (e.g. subsequently, inconsistently, flagrantly), share their experience and talk about the cost of hyper-convenience in different areas of life. Students also discuss the impact of comfort on resilience.

This is a Critical Reading Club worksheet. With this format, students need to read an online article at home and do the exercises in the classroom. Learn more about how to use such worksheets and their benefits in our post.

ACTIVITIES

This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students think about the most recent piece of technology they purchased. They share their reason for buying it and say how it has changed their daily life. After that, students replace phrases with adverbs created from different words (e.g. advertent inadvertently). Next, they revisit the previous statements about the impact of modern technology (e.g. Modern technology has diminished my reliance on others and, perhaps inadvertently, it has contributed to a sense of social isolation.) and rate how true each one is for them on a scale from 0 to 10. Students explain their rating using the adverbs from the sentences. Afterwards, they explain what the phrase ‘Hyper-convenience: a deal with the devil?’ means in the context of the article. Students then discuss various areas (e.g. transportation, entertainment, retail) using points related to the impact of hyper-convenience on daily life. They also use the target adverbs to support their ideas. Finally, students discuss the relationship between convenience and personal resilience.

Is there a minimum subscription period if I choose a monthly subscription?

No, there's no minimum required number of subscription months. You can cancel any time you want. Basically, you can sign up and then cancel your subscription the next day, which will mean you have access for 1 month and won't be charged again.

What currencies can I pay in for my subscription?

Our default currency is USD (American dollar), but you can also pay in EUR (euro), GBP (British pound sterling) or PLN (Polish zloty). You can change the currency you want to pay in at the Pricing page before selecting a subscription plan.

How can I edit an e-lesson plan?

You can get your own editable copy of an e-lesson plan and make changes to it. To do so, either (1) make a copy of it on your Google Drive (preferable method) or (2) download it in a Powerpoint format (but formatting might be a bit off so we can’t guarantee that it will work well).
