LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this vocabulary worksheet are to:

  • learn and practise terms for different kinds of items;
  • engage in talking about objects and paraphernalia;
  • describe images using the target vocabulary from the worksheet.

With this worksheet, students discuss different types of objects, explore general words and phrases for things (e.g. trinket, odds and ends, apparatus) and work on pronunciation, countability and plural forms of the target vocabulary. They also talk about personal items and gadgets, guess objects using vocabulary from the worksheet and describe photos using generic terms for objects.

WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY

This worksheet starts with a warm-up. Students say where they think some photos were taken (e.g. vintage collectables, random household items, old medical equipment). After that, they match the descriptions with the photos. Moving on, students study general words and phrases for talking about objects (e.g. detritus, contraption, trinket). They match them with their meanings. Afterwards, students review stress patterns, countability and plural forms of vocabulary from the worksheet. Then, students discuss questions about personal items, gadgets and miscellaneous objects.

VOCABULARY PRACTICE

In this part of the worksheet, students choose the best word or phrase in sentences and questions about different things (e.g. If you need to dig a hole, look for it among gardening paraphernalia). They then say what object each one is about. Afterwards, students get cards with the names of objects (e.g. stethoscope, beach ball, stapler). They elicit the names from their partner using the target words and phrases from the worksheet. Following that, students engage in talking about objects and describe the things in some photos. They use as many words and phrases from the worksheet as possible.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete gaps with the missing letters to create words about objects. They then match the sentences with their responses. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
