Vocabulary - Christmas traditions

talking about Christmas time

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

  • engage in talking about Christmas time from various perspectives;
  • work with useful language for Christmas traditions;
  • watch a video about decorations for the holidays.

In this lesson, students discuss typical features of Christmas time and practise useful words (e.g. presents, stockings, candles) and collocations (e.g. play Christmas songs). They  explore photos of Christmas decorations, watch a video of a woman decorating her home for the holidays and talk about their experiences and preferences. Students share their opinions, read short texts about how people spend Christmas and reflect on cultural aspects of the holidays. They also work in pairs, playing a guessing game about Christmas gifts.

WARM-UP AND VIDEO

This lesson focuses on talking about Christmas time and starts with a warm-up. Students think about Christmas and name examples for different categories (e.g. feelings, food, activities). Afterwards, they read sentences and match Christmas-themed items (e.g. Christmas lights, biscuits, Christmas songs) with their pictures. Moving on, students examine collocations with the words from the previous task (e.g. hang Christmas lights on the tree). They use them to say which activities they, their family and their friends always, sometimes and never do at Christmas. Students add details. Following that, they look at photos of places with Christmas decorations. Students describe the pictures using the target vocabulary from the lesson. They also share their opinions and experiences. Next, students watch a video of a woman decorating her home for Christmas and tick the activities she does. They then discuss the video, as well as Christmas decorating habits and preferences.

DISCUSSION AND GUESSING GAME

In this part of the lesson, students look at pairs of Christmas scenarios (e.g. getting presents OR giving presents), choose the option they prefer and explain. Moving on, they read short stories about Christmas and match them with the correct questions (e.g. What do you do on Christmas Day?). Afterwards, students engage in talking about Christmas time by answering the questions from the previous task. Next, they examine popular Christmas songs, films, food and characters. Students add more items to each category and discuss their preferences. Finally, in pairs, they get cards with Christmas presents (e.g. scarf, book, smartwatch). Student A describes the first present and says who they’d give it to, without using the names. Student B guesses. They continue with the rest of the words. After three minutes, students change roles. The student who guesses the most wins.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This advanced lesson on tourism also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students choose the correct words for talking about Christmas time in sentences. They then decide what happened next. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
