LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson are to:
- discuss life events and say the years they happened;
- engage in Past Simple practice;
- watch and analyse part of a video about a famous person’s life.
In this lesson, students talk about famous people from different fields, read information about well-known figures and review the past forms of key phrases (e.g. find a job, get divorced, become famous). They explore rules for referring to years, listen to an audio with examples and discuss real events. Students also talk about their experiences and life events, watch part of a video (00:31–02:06) about Albert Einstein and create sentences about his life using the target points from the lesson.

WARM-UP AND USEFUL LANGUAGE
This lesson focuses on Past Simple practice and starts with a warm-up. Students look at a list of jobs (e.g. chef, podcaster, writer) and choose three. For each job, they name a famous person from their country or abroad and add details. After that, students read information about various well-known people in images. They say which facts they already knew about them. Then, students examine useful phrases (e.g. got married, graduated, was born) in the sentences and say what their present forms are. Moving on, they listen to a recording where a speaker reads the sentences from the previous exercise and repeat the years they hear. Afterwards, students complete the years in words with missing numbers (e.g. nineteen oh seven). They then listen to the recording again and check. Next, students complete the rules to speak of years using the numbers from the previous task.
DISCUSSION AND VIDEO
In this part of the lesson, students have more Past Simple practice and say which year real events took place. Following that, they choose life milestones from a list (e.g. find your first job) and write sentences about themselves, including the year for each event. Then, students read the sentences to a partner, who notes down the specific years mentioned. Afterwards, they watch a video about Albert Einstein. First, students look at pictures and say who they think the person is. They then say what they know about him. Next, they watch part of the video and tick the topics that are mentioned. After that, students read out the numbers in sentences about Einstein’s life and guess the correct one. Moving on, they watch the video excerpt again and check. Finally, students match the events in Einstein’s life with the correct dates. Then, they create sentences with the information.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students have some Past Simple practice. They use the past form of words to complete gaps in sentences. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
