Grammar - passive voice

passive voice practice

This is a standalone lesson but it can also be used as part of the set titled:

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

  • encourage passive voice practice through various contexts;
  • learn to report events, facts and updates;
  • describe processes, rules and messages.

In this worksheet, students expand their understanding of the passive voice. They use it to describe processes, talk about news reports and discuss facts about the world. Students also explore customer support and work with rules and sign messages.

DESCRIBING PROCESSES

In this activity, students rewrite texts about processes (making coffee, buying an item online) using passive voice. They then add one final step to each process, starting with Finally (e.g. Finally, the coffee is served to the customer.). After that, students describe different processes (e.g. booking hotel accommodation) using given phrases and the passive voice. They use different tenses and modal verbs.

NEWS REPORTS

In this activity, students get passive voice practice by listening to a news recording. They retell what happened in each case using passive structures. Students also use icons to help them.

FACTS ABOUT THE WORLD

Students work in pairs and get a card with sentences. They complete the first part by forming the correct passive voice. Then, students ask their partner questions to complete the missing information in the second part (e.g. When was the Eiffel Tower built?).

CUSTOMER SUPPORT

In this activity of the lesson devoted to passive voice practice, students complete sentences about customer service updates (e.g. The issue was fixed yesterday.) with the correct verb. They also use the correct passive forms of verbs.

RULES AND MESSAGES

Students look at signs and change the sentences to passive voice (e.g. We will serve lunch at 12. Lunch will be served at 12.). They then write the sentences in the passive voice for more signs with images.
