LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this ESL lesson on making suggestions are to:
- learn and use vocabulary for workplace problems;
- practise phrases for giving and responding to suggestions;
- watch part of a video about stress at work.
Students talk about common workplace problems, practise useful phrases (e.g. argue with, deal with, miss a deadline) and share their experiences. They describe pictures of people having issues at work, watch part of a video (to 02:04) about work-related stress and share their opinions. Students also work on their reading skills through dialogues, study phrases for making suggestions (e.g. Let’s…, Good idea!, I don’t think it will work) and role-play situations where they make, accept and reject suggestions in a work context.
This is a Flipped Classroom lesson plan. In a nutshell, it means that the first part of the lesson needs to be done by students at home. Learn more about flipped classroom and how we implement it in these lesson plans in our post.
PRE-CLASS ACTIVITIES
In the pre-class part of this ESL lesson on making suggestions, students look at sentences and use words to complete phrases to talk about problems at work (e.g. lose the internet connection, miss a deadline, argue with someone). After that, they add new endings to the sentences from the previous task (e.g. Sometimes I am late for work because…).
IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES
In the in-class part of this ESL lesson on making suggestions, students talk about a problem they recently had at work. Afterwards, they describe workplace problems in pictures using the target phrases from the lesson (e.g. be out of, get injured). Moving on, students describe more pictures. Next, they discuss questions about workplace problems and stress. After that, students decide which words in sentences are correct (e.g. People who work remotely are more/less stressed.) and explain their thoughts. Students then watch part of a video (to 02:04) and check their ideas. Following that, they watch the video again and complete sentences with one word. Then, students discuss stress in work environments.
Next in this ESL lesson on making suggestions, students look at pairs of situations (e.g. working in a noisy office OR working in a messy office). They choose which one would make them more stressed and give details. Moving on, they read dialogues about issues at work and decide which problems from the previous task they are about. Next, students find phrases (e.g. That sounds great!, I’m not sure about that) for different categories (phrases to give suggestions, phrases to say you like a suggestion and phrases to say you don’t agree with a suggestion). After that, they role-play dialogues. Student A chooses a problem and Student B gives three suggestions. Finally, they look at different situations (e.g. plan a special farewell for a colleague) and think of all the possible ways of dealing with them.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students correct mistakes in different sentences. They then choose dialogues and continue them using the target phrases from the lesson. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
