WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY

This ESL lesson on farming starts with a warm-up. Students list things they usually see on a farm. After that, they talk about experiences they have in areas involving farming (e.g. looking after farm animals). Next, students explore farming phrases (e.g. reduce labour, used fertilisers, harvest the crops) by matching the halves of sentences about farming processes and practices. Moving on, they do activities in which they name livestock (e.g. goat, sheep, cow) and crops (e.g. tomatoes, rice, carrots). Students also say how often or when farmers do common tasks (e.g. water the fields).

VIDEO AND DISCUSSION

In this part of this ESL lesson on farming, students read pairs of varied farming situations (e.g. having a big farm OR having a small farm). They choose the option they would prefer and give reasons. Following that, students watch part of a video about hi-tech farming and choose its correct summary. Moving on, they watch the video excerpt again and choose the correct option in sentences about smart farming trends. Finally, students discuss questions about smart farming.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This ESL lesson on farming also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete the gaps in sentences to create words related to farming. They then finish the sentences with their own ideas. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
