The main objectives of this ESL lesson on body parts are to:
- talk about how we use parts of the body;
- review body parts vocabulary;
- listen to conversations about accidents and pain.
In this lesson, students discuss body parts (e.g. skin, neck, ankle) and their characteristics, explore some sounds (e.g. /k/, /ʌ/, /ɪ/) and talk about how we use and feel parts of the body. They work in pairs and list body parts by category. Students also read and listen to conversations about pain and injuries and play a guessing game.

WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY
This ESL lesson on body parts starts with a warm-up. Students choose the odd words in lines with body parts (e.g. leg, hand, head, eye) and explain their choice. After that, they label body parts (e.g. stomach, fingers, toes) in a photo with words in sentences (e.g. Your foot has five toes.). The sentences help students understand the words. Moving on, they match more body parts (e.g. nail, knee, throat) with sentences (e.g. It’s at the end of a finger or a toe.). Next, students look at groups of words and decide which ones have specific sounds (e.g. /ɪ/ like in the word ‘sit’ /sɪt/) in them. Afterwards, they answer questions about how we use body parts, using the target vocabulary from the lesson.
LISTENING PRACTICE AND DISCUSSION
In this part of the ESL lesson on body parts, students get a set of cards with categories (e.g. 3 body parts that come in pairs). In pairs, they take turns choosing a card and listing body parts for the category. If a student provides a correct answer, they get a point. The student with the most points wins. After that, they read conversations about injuries and pain and guess what words might be missing. Then, students listen to the conversations and check their guesses. Finally, they work in pairs. Student A chooses a problem (e.g. your ankle hurts) and explains what happened without using the given verb and without saying or showing the body part. Student B guesses what the problem is. They then swap roles and continue until each student has guessed three problems.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This ESL lesson on body parts also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete a crossword with names of body parts. They then create a word using the seven letters in the marked boxes. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
