LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this ESL lesson on reflexive pronouns are to:
- learn and practise reflexive and reciprocal pronouns;
- discuss solo activities and shared experiences;
- watch a video segment about a man who goes to a restaurant alone.
Students talk about preferences for doing things alone or with others. They watch part of a video about a man eating alone in public, discuss their experiences and explore reflexive and reciprocal pronouns (e.g. myself, ourselves, each other). Students also work in pairs, share their thoughts and express opinions on independence and collaboration.
WARM-UP AND REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS
This ESL lesson on reflexive pronouns starts with a warm-up. Students look at pairs of options (e.g. go to the cinema alone OR go to the cinema with a colleague), say which one they would prefer and give reasons. Afterwards, they watch part of a video (to 02:25) about a man who goes to a restaurant alone. Then, students choose the best summary. Moving on, they discuss questions about the experience of eating alone in public. Following that, students match sentence halves containing reflexive pronouns (e.g. I’m not going to cut up vegetables for you anymore. You are old enough to do it yourselves). Next, they do tasks where they revisit the statements from the previous task. Students identify and apply rules for using reflexive pronouns and reciprocal pronouns.
GRAMMAR PRACTICE AND DISCUSSION
In this part of this ESL lesson on reflexive pronouns, students read sentences and choose the correct reflexive and reciprocal pronouns. After that, they read questions (e.g. Why haven’t you fixed the mixer yet?) and write responses using the target pronouns from the lesson (e.g. I tried fixing it myself, but it didn’t work). Next, students work in pairs and do tasks where they discuss the benefits of doing activities alone versus with others. They use reflexive pronouns and reciprocal pronouns. Finally, students read sentences about preferences for independent and collaborative approaches to various activities (e.g. Living by yourself is much easier than living with others). They say if they agree or disagree and give reasons.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This ESL lesson on reflexive pronouns also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students read sentences and correct the mistakes. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.

There’s a typo in ex. 2 – “fees” instead of “feels”. Then, in ex. 5B, point 1, a word “idea” is used instead of “opportunity”, like in ex. 4 (not a mistake, but consistency would be great). Nevertheless, great worksheet!
Thanks for picking up on these. We’ll get them sorted asap! Glad you enjoyed the lesson!!
i think we really need something like that for the object pronouns
Great idea! This is a really important thing to practise.
