LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson are to:
- engage in discussing social media from a critical perspective;
- practise vocabulary for debating social media;
- watch part of a video about changes in digital platforms.
Students talk about their experiences with social media, watch a video excerpt (00:43–04:04) on digital platform changes and debate their impact. They read comments, explore vocabulary for discussing social media (e.g. curate, dilute, suppress) and share their opinions about the risks of social media. Students also read and talk about some less popular social media platforms.
WARM-UP AND VIDEO
This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students write down things they would expect to see in their social media feed if they opened it. They then engage in discussing social media by answering questions about their experiences in the past and today. Afterwards, they watch the first part of a video about how social media has changed. Students explain what the speaker means when he mentions social media now and in the future. Following that, they discuss social media and the shift to new digital spaces.
VOCABULARY AND DISCUSSION
In this part of the lesson, students read comments related to concerns and risks of digital platforms. They match words for discussing social media (e.g. incite, polarize, curate) with their definitions. After that, students share if any of the issues from the previous exercise have ever concerned or upset them. Then, they mention other issues they have encountered on social media. Next, students choose the correct verbs in statements. They then choose four sentences and finish them with their own ideas. Finally, students read about alternative social media platforms. They discuss their pros, cons and future.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students look at sentences and find words and phrases with the same meaning as words for discussing social media. They then replace them with the correct forms of the target vocabulary. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
